Chicago Marathon training has officially begun

Training for a marathon in 12 weeks isn’t incredibly ideal. However, my training for my triathlon has kept me pounding the pavement in addition to cross training. I’m hoping that my previous marathon training experience combined with my fortitude and stubbornness will get me through my race in October.

For some reason, Mother Nature has decided that our little section of the world needs to have torrential downpours causing flooding and Great Lake size puddles on all of my favorite running routes. So my six mile run was completed at the gym.

Well not all six miles, I was able to get to four but the heat of the gym and just feeling gassed left me unable to do more. I’m sure that I could have pushed myself but the more I went the more I was concerned about the long term effect on training. Certainly I could have pushed myself those last two miles, but knowing my body the way I do I would have had to spend two or three days recovering and therefore missing more training miles.

Training on the treadmill for anything more than four miles is brutal, at least for me personally. But if it’s all I have available then that’s what I will do. Considering the weather this week I believe I will be spending quite a bit of time on the “deadmill” this week. Not wanting to start my training off on a sour note, I’ve got Netflix documentaries lined up to keep me entertained and motivated and a plan for cross training that will keep the week interesting.

This is going to be an interesting 12 weeks, but if I stay focused and on my plan it’ll be a fun 12 weeks and an even more fun race.
